75% off

This is the first year that Meredith and I have gone to Adventure Guide's 75% off sale. They have a few racks of clothing, and a pile of shoes, all at 75% off. Between the two of us, we found over $300 of great stuff, which normally would have cost us $1200. Wow. I think we'll come back in future years!

Forza Motorsport 2

Yesterday as I opened our mail box I was greeted by a bubble wrapped copy of Forza Motorsport 2. Back in November, the Xbox 360 I won was supposed to come with this game, but due to the game being finished several months later than they had anticipated, it only arrived now! While the visuals are nothing the write home about, the realism factor is a little mind blowing, and I love that you can race everday cars made by Honda, Acura, Toyota, Ford, etc. I like how they've organized all of the cars into classes: What a difference to race a Ford Focus and then to switch to a formula 1 racing car. I've never been that excited about car races on TV, but driving a formula 1 car in this sim has given me a real appreciation for the beasts that these cars are.

Startcraft II

Blizzard Entertainment has done it again... get ready for Starcraft II, the bigger, badder version of the original. The intro video that I saw a week ago was mind blowing. The visuals are very enticing and the game play looks as good as ever. I'm actually a little scared; do I really want to get addicted to another RTS?

3 cavities :(

After 21 years of flawless dental records, I am sad to report that I had three cavities filled this week. The freezing is still wearing off this evening. That's some serious motivation to be more consistant at flossing, ugh!

The Room

Peter Molyneux recently did a presentation at the GDC to demo The Room, an ultra-realistic graphics/physics simulation that pushes the envelope far beyond anything I've seen. Wow.

Toys toys toys

This year there are all sorts of cool toys that I'd enjoy playing with -- too bad they're so expensive :) Here's a list of things that have caught my eye: 1. The Nintendo Wii: I can't wait to try this thing. Brilliant move on Nintendo's part... I hope it does as well in the end as it has done out of the gate. 2. The Zune. I'm fascinated by this little gadget. The screen looks great. Too bad it's a bit chubby, but I could live with that. 3. PS3: While I would love to stare at this shiny object beside my TV, the going market value makes this impossible. Oh well :) 4. Xbox 360 Steering Wheel: I love racing games on the 360, so I can't wait to try this thing out. From the screenshots it looks as thought Microsoft has done a great job designing it. 5. Flight Simulator X: After just completed ground school, I'm intrigued by this 10th edition of MS Flight Simulator. The screenshots look great. 6. NHL 07 for Xbox 360: The demo for this game shows off some nice graphics and good use of the controller for stick handling and shooting. I'd like to try the retail version of this game. (The demo is limited to shoot outs)

The PS3 launches

I can't believe what a big deal the PS3 launch has become, especially considering how close in power it is to the Xbox 360, which launched a year ago! I read today that a PS3 was sold on eBay for $9,000 US. I've seen others going for $3,000+. What are these people thinking?! I've been playing in the iCoke contest this month trying to win one. Two weeks have gone by without any luck, so we'll see what the next month holds. If PS3s were being sold on eBay for their in-store price, I'd be tempted to keep a won PS3, but as it stands that would be crazy... it makes the prospect of winning one monetarily lucrative, but a little emotionally dry.

Windows Vista

Here I am, sitting in front of Windows Vista Beta 2 for the first time. She's an interesting toy at this point. Lots of visual polish, decent/good performance, and a myriad of features that I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of. I'm relatively pleased with how different Vista is from XP... I was expecting XP with a different skin, but that's not the case at all. You can tell that a lot of thought has gone into refactoring the UI, protecting the user from the Internet, etc. There have been a few frustrations, but overall I'm impressed.
