Beliefs : Free will

I believe that people have free will. That is, the outcome of a person's decision can not be foretold by physics; that decisions are made involving a person's consciousness, and that human consciousness is extra-physical.

If you only believe in a physical world, an apparent contradiction to this is that the world behaves very much like a machine -- that is, there is a strong correlation between every cause and effect. Likewise, it is not irrational to observe the human brain and conclude that it is nothing more than fancy machine. And how is it that a machine has free will? Quantum mechanics affords a degree of unpredictability to the universe, which opens a scientific door for free will, but connecting those two dots is more than my mind can handle!
