Speaking
September 6, 2008

Although I haven't put much thought into the language out problem (transforming ideas into written statements), something occurred to me today: Any time a person, or an AI, goes to say something, they have the opportunity to try and parse what they're about to say using their language in layer. If the resulting meaning is the same or similar enough to the idea they were trying to express, they have the green light to go ahead and speak. Otherwise, the speaker needs to go back to the drawing board and figure out how else to express their idea.

Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden

Meredith and I rented this movie on a whim but we really enjoyed it. It's made by the same guy who did Supersize Me, and his brand of humor worked surprisingly well with this subject matter. In addition to being very funny, the film maker does a great job helping us to see the the West from alternative viewpoints, and also does a good job educating his audience about Islam.

Acknowledging God
September 2, 2008

In watching the men's Olympic marathon this year, I was touched to see the winner, after crossing the line, stop and kneel down, drop his head, and pause for half a minute, crossing himself. Several of the top finishers also acknowledged their Heavenly Maker. When I was a kid and saw athletes do this, it always felt as though it was some kind habitual thing without much meaning. But as I watched these athletes, and felt the emotion of the situation, it was somehow different. Part of what makes it more meaningful now is that I relate it to to how I felt finishing the marathon, wanting to praise God for the achievement, to deflect the feelings of joy and satisfaction toward the one who makes all good things possible, and ultimately, say a big THANK YOU!
