who's among us?
January 26, 2008

Every now and again I see something that someone has invented and I think, "That's pure geneous, why didn't I think of that myself"! Well today is one of those days. The website maps.amung.us has a simple wizard you can use to add a map widget to your site that records where your vistors are from, and displays them on a map. Now granted, my website isn't a good candidate for this since I get very few hits, and they're likely all from Canada (or Turkey), but I'm still just tickled with their implementation of a great idea.

Update: I wonder who the guy from Palm Bay, Florida is? :)

Wired Article

I came across this article yesterday while perusing Digg. It is a fascinating yet sad article about the lives and deaths of two modern day AI pioneers, both tirelessly chasing after the goal of human level machine intelligence. For me it underscores how often brilliant people struggle with mental illness, and how discouraging it can be to chase after unrealistic dreams, especially when those dreams define who you are. The field of AI is a humbling one.

Exercise and mood
January 16, 2008

I was reminded the other day how much of an affect exercise can have on mood. I think it was a Tuesday or Wednesday night, and I had felt tired and unmotivated to do anything around the house for a couple of nights. (Maybe even bored) It was time to go for my next run, so I obediently got ready and headed out the door. Half an hour later, as I was getting home, my mood was 180 degress different... I was happy, energetic, my mind was busy with all the things I wanted to do, etc. It was just amazing how much of a "reset" my run was.

It makes me think that people who suffer with mood disorders should train for a half marathon... they might just find that exercise is the best medicine.
