BB10 Jam KWAugust 22, 2012
Tomorrow I'm excited to be attending BB10 Jam KW. I attended BB10 Jam and Orlando and had a great time, although I was distracted with the release of Flix and so I missed a few sessions that I wanted to attend.
I enjoy the atmosphere of conferences: Meeting new people, going to keynotes that energize you, being pampered a little bit, and going to interesting talks. Although software development is becoming more "social" these days, such as the social aspects of making mobile apps and selling apps to real people, most of it is still a bit impersonal, with interactions happening over the Internet. So it's great to make the most of opportunities to be with other developers in person.
One thing I'm curious about is whether the sessions will be almost the same as the ones in May, or whether they will have evolved, with new or more in depth information.
Last week I had a few hours to work on converting iTunes Sync to BB10 and almost got it finished. I ran into a snag with the
textWidth and
textHeight properties of
Label not working and I don't think I've gotten a response on the
forums yet, so I should see if I can get a response.
App Idea: About people you knowAugust 20, 2012
I have a terrible memory, and as I get older, I know more and more people and I get to see them less and less. When I do see them and get to chat with them briefly, I wish I was better and remembering what they tell me. Maybe they started a new job, or they've been enjoying a new sport, etc. But alas, I forget.
I'd like an app that would tie into Google Contacts and would allow me to easily store notes about people so that when someone comes to mind I can remind myself of the things that I would otherwise forget. It would need to work via the cloud and I'd want to be able to access it via all of my devices: Phone, tablet, PC, etc.
Perhaps it is simple as having easy access to the "Notes" field and dressed up a little in terms of a slick UI.
I suppose the standard "Contacts" app could be used for this, so that's a place to start to see whether the UI is good enough.
Use Case: Camera + Share to FacebookAugust 19, 2012
My first couple of days with a Samsung Galaxy S III has enlightened me one of the "killer apps" of mobile phones: Taking great photos and then quickly sharing them with friends and family.
I've obviously known about this use case for a long time, but having such a great camera built into the phone with such an efficient share UI has really brought this use case to life for me.
It was always hampered previously by either super-crappy or at best mediocre image quality. For example, taking photos indoor with a PlayBook almost always yields either poor or mediocre results. To be fair, the Galaxy S III doesn't solve the problem faced by mobile cameras in low light, but because I'm out-and-about with the camera, I'm usually in good light, and even when I've been indoors, so long as there is a window nearby, the image quality is still pretty good.
The summary is this: If you can combine a killer camera in a mobile phone, and make it incredibly easy and fun to share photos to Facebook (etc), then you have delivered something huge.
That's why I'm really, really hoping that RIM has something up their sleeve for the BB10 camera. At the very least, I hope it's not a mediocre smartphone camera. And, I'm hoping that the share UI for BB10 is killer.
If you ask me, this is a *very* high value target for RIM to hit.
