Struggle and happiness
April 18, 2008

An interesting nugget from Dean Karnazes is that much of the happiness in life comes from the struggle.

It's an interesting thought, but I think there's a lot of truth in it. Perhaps in part it's the triumph over struggle that gives us joy, but I also think there's truth in the observation that struggle itself is an important part of feeling alive, engaged, happy. There's definitely something notable that happens in the human brain when it is challenged to overcome.

Birth and death
March 30, 2008

Another thought about the mystery of death, along the same lines as a previous post of mine:

In a sense, every birth is a death to what came before. And so, death is birth disguised.

As before, the image of shouts of heavenly joy come to mind as the reedemed soul is brought forth into the heavenly realm.

Hunger and physical activity
March 27, 2008

Being a lean guy with a sensitivity to low blood sugar, there have been countless times when I've gotten that sort of sick low blood sugar feeling. Your energy gets sapped, you can't think, you want to lay down, and sometimes there's a mild headache associated with it.

Something I've noticed though, is that if you do exactly the opposite thing, that is, perform some light to moderate physical labour, the feeling starts to subside.

Here's a little theory: Perhaps the energy stores in the muscles begin to activate and populate the blood with blood sugars when physical activity is performed, thereby correcting the low blood sugar state, whereas if you simply relax and continue to perform mental tasks, you're just burning up even more of the little blood sugar you have left.

Just a thought.
